a word or five hundred about our young fellow - or a day in the life of oskar: a text for those who are missing out on the day-to-day antics

oskar got up at 6:38am, drank milk, called out 'nanna' and scooted into jenny's room at about 6:50am. jenny tells me that he flicked the light switch on and off a couple of times to be sure that it flashed into her eyes and that she was awake. then he went into his play room and upended his lego box - blocks everywhere. he can join to large lego blocks on top of each other to make a tower (however, with his wooden blocks he can make a tower of 8 pieces).

then he tried to climb up on top of the red ikea locker - only managing to get the toes of his right foot up. returning to ground level he placed "monkey" on the slide and pushed him down (oh and talking of pushing, oskar's friend zoe pushed him into the pool yesterday - he wasn't worried at all!)

oskar joined nanna for a shower and the traipsed back into our room for another milk snack and then he was off again. nanna and oskar went downstairs and got oskar some grapes for him to eat in the stroller as they walk to the cinnamon grand hotel to buy bread, croissants and pastries for breakfast. nanna says that he is very good at the royal wave and delights the passers-by. he ate a croissant on the walk home. it was 8:45am.

breakfast today was promite on toast, a soy baby-cino, pineapple, mango, avocado. sometimes he also has cheese - but not today though. he helped himself to a cup of water from the water dispenser.

after breakfast he talked to aunty jan on the phone, kicked his gigantic 50cent plastic soccer ball around the loungeroom for a while, and wanted to help daddy with the washing up - but that was really just a ruse to run the water and wash his hands and feet. when daddy got tough and stopped the water, oskar lost it. mummy saved the day by suggesting that we make play dough.
recipe:
1/4 cup salt
1 cup flour
1 tbsp cooking oil
1/4 cup water
food colouring

method:
mix the salt and flour together, add the oil, then the water and food colour slowly. knead until a good dough like mixture. play.

mmm. play dough play lasted a good couple of hours (with a slight interlude while alex took him outside to watch the sri lankan independence day fly-over), throwing it against the wall, rolling it, cutting shapes, pretending it was pizza (and feeding it to nana), pressing the playmobil shapes into it etc. oskar is now covered in blue and red dough - so we figure another shower and then out to lunch at cafe japan, where he dined on inari sushi, cold soba noodles, cucumber sushi, hiyayakko (cold tofu), and sauteed corn (bataa coon).

home to bed to for his daily nap, where he refused to sleep as he insisted on saying "star" and feeding alex the star pattern off his sheet. 45mins later he dropped off and slept for two hours while a storm passed over us.

after his nap he had a picnic of grilled cheese toast fingers, a handful of grapes and a chocolate soy milk drink on the loungeroom floor. delighted in the chocolate milk he said "chocolate" so we all laughed loudly, praising his efforts, while i secretly thought "oh no another evans chocoholic".

more soccer, some photos, a couple of books and generally having a good time - it was then time for dinner. we went to the cricket club cafe where he ate nachos, garlic bread, some fries, some vegetable pie, a huge fresh mixed fruit juice (drunk through an hawaiian cocktail straw - with umbrella - that we brought from home) and finished it off with a small taste of pavlova.

back home we read "brown bear", had a ticklefest, rode the gla-gla, watched a luminiscent star (and fed it to the crocodile in "i won't bite") and went upstairs to go to bed. alex and oskar played "coming to get you" on the bed for a while with oskar sometimes hiding under his jelly cat "sheepy". suitably amped for bed, oskar had another shower with alex. today he discovered that if he turned his beach bucket upside down he could sit on it, which he did for the whole shower. it took some scrubbing to get the play dough out of his hair.

i took him to get changed into his jammies and did our nightly routine of tooth brushing and massaging burt's bees apricot oil into his legs (to counter the dry skin). dressed in a blue bonds size 2 sleep suit with feet, oskar was ready for bed - a quick drink of milk then he asked (in his own way) to go to "oskar's bed". in he hopped and lay there for a few minutes singing before we heard him go to sleep. what a busy day. is it time for bed yet?

ps: yesterday oskar stopped the traffic in colpetty by responding with his best ever dance moves to some sri lankan pop classics that started blaring from the local video shop. sriyani and jenny couldn't stop laughing as oskar shook it hip-hop stylee in front of an admiring audience.
